Level: Basics
Hashtags are important if you want to reach a wider audience, but they shouldn’t be stressful.
Hashtag basics
- You can use 30 hashtags per post, but Instagram recommends 3-5
- You can put them in the description or the comments
- Mix broad hashtags with niche ones
- Don’t use generic hashtags
- Use sentence case so visually impaired users can understand them – i.e. #WriterWednesday not #writerwednesday
- Starting a hashtag for your book and using it in all posts can be a great way to build content – encourage people to use the tag
- Don’t forget to tag people too – i.e. #BookRelease #DebutAuthor2024 @OrionBooks
Hashtag generators
There are some free and paid Hashtag generators out there:
These can help you quickly find relevant tags and pick a mixture of widely used and more niche options.
